New Drama Tonight on Flipping Out!

If you don't know the overly arrogant obsessive compulsive designer/house flipper Jeff Lewis, I highly suggest you tune in tonight to Bravo's Flipping Out.
Things come to a head when Jeff and his once Partner in love, now partner in business, Ryan argue over bragging and property rights to their Valley Oak flip. I write this show off as work related viewing, but its hard not to feel yourself rooting for Jeff despite his tyrannical demands. His love for those who work for him, like his assistant/best-friend/future roommate in the retirement home Jenny and his cougar maid Zoila.

When you aren't preoccupied with the drama you are sure to focus in on Jeff's ultra modern design LA interiors. I put together this look inspired by Jeff and his work. I took care to include dark colors paired with nickel accents and plenty of pet friendly accessories!

A Well Appointed Home: Aerin Lauder

Trying to define what makes a well appointed home can be somewhat subjective, but one thing that is undeniable and a core staple of our design aesthetic at The Well Appointed House is how a homeowner meshes comfort, personalization and style. We love Aerin Lauder's Hampton home, as photographed in the July issue of Elle Decor and reported on by Kristina Stewart Ward, because it's camera ready but at the same time, it's not hard to picture milk spills and family time around the TV.
The Well Appointed House particularly loves the kitchen and the way she displayed family photos, her children's artwork and white designer Chippendale Chairs!
Making a well appointed house a well appointed home is all about the attention to the details. Throughout her house Ms. Lauder employs the use of beautiful and interesting chandeliers to give it that custom feel.
We love this Crystal Shower Chandelier in Short or Long; they play with height and diversify the look of a room.

Another element of Aerin's home that we love is how she meshes traditional and modern so seamlessly. Another motif we see throughout is blue and white porcelain pieces paired with animal prints and fun colors, making it anything but boring.

While Melissa's In England...

Melissa is in England this week but for the rest of us who are "stuck" enjoying the beautiful American Autumn skies we can only dream of the rolling English countryside. At the Well Appointed House we offer a lot of products made in Great Britain (and more to come depending on how big of a plane Ms. Hawks can get) especially for the kids. I went to see The September Issue with my friend the other day (great documentary, btw!) and there was an ad for the new movie Bright Star with Abbie Cornish. Bright Star is the love story between poet John Keats and Fanny Brawne and although some of the lines seemed tres cheesy, the setting is undeniably beautiful; it definitely brought me back to my pre-English-major-nerdy days where I loved Sense and Sensibility and liked to pretend I was a Dashwood daughter... ANYWAY the point is, the English countryside can be a great source of inspiration for your child's playroom and imagination. In the spirit of that I've pulled some English pieces (Wingreen is one of our favourite brands) to create a whimsical space. Wellies not included.

In London to See the Queen...

Okay Ladies and Gentlemen, I have arrived in London this morning for a few days of perusing the latest must-haves for the home and, of course, closet. I am popping into Harrod's now, then shops around Knightsbridge and hopefuly some fabulous antique gems...we have tea lined up at the Lanesborough and an evening of sumptious foods and shows. More later...

What's New, What's Next at 200 Lex Report!

Last night I joined designers, store owners and bloggers alike at The New York City Design Center for an evening of champagne, fine cheeses, fruit, sushi, more champagne, these really yummy little spinach thingys and oh yea, informative speakers forecasting what is new in design. I had an amazing time scouring the showrooms, writing down pieces to fall in love with and discovering new designers. The theme throughout was a reach towards more modern lines; even the uber traditional houses were showing more modern shapes with subtle country nods. That's all I'm at liberty to discuss, but be on the lookout for these great new additions at The Well Appointed House!

One of the most interesting seminars I attended that evening was given by House Beautiful's Style Director Newell Turner and Benjamin Moore's Senior Designer Sonu Mathews. Billed as a talk on finding the color you can't get sick of, Turner was upfront saying he didn't have thatexact color per se since color is subjective. What he was able to give listeners was an interesting way to find the color that is right for you. When Mr. Turner suggested Numerology I checked my program to make sure I wasn't in some sort of dating seminar. I was spectacle at first... numerology is something I play around with in cheesy chick magazines, not in 113 year-old publication like House Beautiful, but at the same time Turner is the style director of a 113 year-old publication and I just turned the tassel on my cap, so I played along and I suggest you do the same! To find the color that is right for you here is how you play...

1. Write down your full name (no middle name). I left enough room between letters to add numbers. No space needed between first and last name.
EX: G A B R I E L L E K A T Z
2. Now for each letter there is a corresponding number (see chart below).

3. Add the numbers together to get a two digit number. Add the two numbers together until you get a single digit. That single digit corresponds with the color above.

To interpret what these numbers/colors mean Turner enlisted the help of Interior Designer and spiritualist Ellen Kennon. This is what she has to say:

1. Red: The most dominant personality. A visionary and risk-taker: energetic, passionate, tenacious, flamboyant, and courageous.
2. Orange: Balanced both mentally and physically. Happy, loyal, takes each day as it comes.
3. Yellow: Cheerful, charming, magnetic, intelligent, confident, and creative. Somewhat psychic, and enigmatic. A good leader and negotiator.
4. Green: The perfect balance between the physical and mental. Grounded, logical, not easily influenced, rarely judgmental. An intensely loyal friend — and has lots of them.
5. Blue: Optimistic, empathetic, flexible, idealistic, tranquil, patient, devoted. A natural mother.
6. Indigo: A brilliant old soul who is intuitive, sensitive, impulsive, curious, and ambitious, with a great lust for life.
7. Violet: Also an old soul. Intense, cerebral, wise, loving, generous, sentimental, and artistic.
8. Rose: Main qualities are strength, love, and leadership. Turns visions into realities.
9. Gold: Radiates love, joy, compassion, and understanding.

(Thanks House Beautiful!)

My color was green, which actually fits pretty well since my gaggle of friends will say I'm pretty mental. But all kidding aside it does work: I do tend to go for some bright green pieces in my wardrobe for some pop, grew up with Kelly green walls and do like me them margaritas! It is a good indication of my personality (minus the rarely judgmental part). It seemed to work for the people around me too, so try it out. It might just help you find the color you should be decorating with.

Turner also had some great tips, once you pick your color of course. When going to talk to the professionals it's important to know the lingo. Here's your abridged Dictionary,
HUE: pure and unadulterated color!
SHADE: Any color mixed with black
TINT: Any color mixed with white
After you go to your paint store and pick a tint or shade of your personal hue it's important to test that sample before going to town on your walls, but what Turner suggested, which I thought was pretty smart was to paint the sample on something portable and move it around the room to see how it picks up the light in different spots.

Sonu Mathews said "color is more than a hue- its a visceral force in design..." She gave an expert presentation on the history of color, studies done by the people at Benjamin Moore. Mathews and her team found that on even numbered decades trends leaned towards cooler tints and on odd numbered decades people were more apt to dip their paint brush in darker, warmer colors. If this theory holds true, in one more year we will be looking at a lot more warmer shades and according to Mathews that is just where we are going. The new hot color for 2010 is hunter green!

The Well Appointed House couldn't agree with Mathews more when she says inspiration for color can come from anywhere. Her top sources for inspiration are mood, fashion, trends and of course nostalgia. You may have loved the smells coming from your Grandmother's kitchen, but her wall paper... that's a whole other story. Still, when drawing upon nostalgia as inspiration for your next space see how a piece or color affects you.

Okay, so I am slave to my blackberry, but when I heard about this new application, I began to seriously considering switching over to the I-Phone. Benjamin Moore teamed up with Apple to create this AMAZING application for your I-Phone. Okay, say you are walking around and see this great color from someone's shopping bag or some billboard somewhere, well, snap a picture using the app and "Ben" will try its best to find the perfect color match. Need to get it that second? There is also a GPS incorporated in the app so you can find your nearest paint store. Oh yea, it's free. I foresee a lot of impulse buying!

The Bee's Knees: Black and Yellow Hot Color Combo

Black and yellow is the hot new couple on the scene these days and at The Well Appointed House we don't need to stop and wonder why. We love the way the yellow pops against the black making it a fresh look.

These rooms we found courtesy of Metropolitan Home certainly take it to the next level, but at The Well Appointed House we find even little pick me ups in black and splashes of yellow in something as simple as a wastebasket next to a chair can give you that same look.

Screenspiration: Casablanca

For this week's installment of screenspiration we are going back to the 1942 smash Casablanca; the story of love, intrigue and some awesome window treatments. At The Well Appointed House we have a great selection of Moroccan inspired pieces to enhance a room without overpowering it, like we see throughout the movie
The Marrakech Tent and Ottoman is a great addition to a child's room and because of its bright colors it is great in any play space and although it does have Middle Eastern hints it isn't overpowering. When pulling some pieces for this look I looked for arches against stark whites and particularly love how this chandelier evokes that romantic old world intrigue but is still light enough to work in a little girls room.

For a more adult inspired approach to the Casablanca look The Well Appointed House has a great mix of items. We took Moroccan staples such as the arches and gold and paired them with more modern pieces that you are going to want to "play again, Sam."

Designer Betsy Johnson To Design Eloise Room In Plaza Hotel

Kay Thompson's fictional character Eloise checked into the Plaza Hotel of NYC in 1955 and her spirit has yet to leave it. After undergoing 450 million dollars in renovations, rendering the famous hotel more of an uber luxurious apartment complex, funky fashion designer Betsy Johnson will be designing a two bedroom suite dedicated to, who else, Eloise, in the book's pink and black color scheme. Johnson, who marches to the beat of her own drum much like our beloved Eloise said:

"I'm tickled pink to be designing the Eloise room in the Plaza. When I recently moved uptown and my first granddaughter was born I rediscovered Eloise and hoped that something magical would happen between me and my favorite hotel. This is the perfect pink combo!"

Eloise was a personal favorite of mine growing up and I still enjoy peaking through my old copies of her books. I can't wait to see what scribble will be on the living room walls, where Nanny will be sleeping and if you have to say "It's me, Eloise!" when you call for room service when the room comes to life in Spring 2010.

At The Well Appointed House we have a few suggestions for Ms. Johnson to help create a room perfect for Eloise, Nanny and Weenie.

Monkey Bar New York City

To celebrate my birthday this week, my husband and I hit Graydon Carter's newly relaunched Monkey Bar at 60 East 54th Street.  We were greated by a surprisingly friendly bouncer, who opened the door to the bar I remembered well.  It was a favorite hang out of ours ten years ago when we were first dating...a convenient midtown location just blocks from both of our offices. The bar was packed and the low lighting enhanced the mystery from the moment we entered.  We walked down the chic zebra skin covered stairs and onto the original dark wood flooring to the main dining room, where red leather seating and mirrored art deco pillars divide the upper and lower areas.  Graydon has classic old-school brass sconces with simple beige crackled shades on the walls and whimsical monkey lamps and accessories throughout. The new Ed Sorel mural was fascinating to look at and made us feel as though we had stepped back into the era of the Stork Club with images of Fred Astaire and Duke Ellington dancing across the walls.

The setting was perfect (Allison Luyten Aston who is married to one of my husband's fraternity brothers, Jay, was hosting a dinner for Aerin Lauder Zinterhofer and others over to our right). I had the Foie Gras and Lobster Thermidor and  had no complaints.  The food was actually delicious and our waiter was quite the charmer.  In the spirit of the Monkey Bar, I have pulled together some of my favorite monkey-inspired items from The Well Appointed House

Speaking of Graydon Carter and the Monkey Bar, I come to my good friend Duff McDonald....Duff McDonald is a New York-based journalist. A contributing editor at New York magazine, he has also written for Vanity Fair, Conde Nast Portfolio, GQ, WIRED, Time, and others.  In 2004, he was the recipient of two Canadian National Magazine Awards—Best Business Story (gold) and Best Investigative Reporting (silver)—for Conrad’s Fall in National Post Business.  I am pleased to report that his latest book,
Last Man Standing, his biography of Jamie Dimon, chairman and CEO of JPMorgan Chase, will be published by Simon & Schuster on October 6, 2009.

I hear that a swanky book party at the Canadian Consulate in New York City is planned for early October to celebrate the book's launch and Duff is already receiving early buzz.  Newsweek has published an excerpt of the book - you can read it here, The Banker Who Saved Wall Street: How JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon bailed out Bear Stearns and the federal government - and lived to turn a profit....and in Fortune you can read Jamie Dimon vs. Sandy Weill.  Here Duff sheds new light on one of the most interesting business partnerships in modern American capitalism.  Here is Duff:

He lives in Bronxville with his stylish wife, Caroline, who works at the New York Times for the Style Magazine, and their daughter Marguerite.  You can pre-order the book here for $18.48 through Amazon.com.  Maybe Caroline will let us have a peek into their home - she has some beautiful Herend china and blue and white accessories and fabrics that I really love.  Stay tuned.

NYC Fashion Week Report: Tory Burch

The highly anticipated debut of Tory Burch's 2010 spring line was yesterday morning at an informal gathering under the tents. The ladies of The Well Appointed House count her as one of their favorite designers for her effortless sophistication mixed with Indian influences and a dash of prep.
This season we saw her lean towards the bohemian with with tye-dye minis, leather, boyfriend fits and just a splash of sparkle.
Taking looks from Tory's line I've found these must have products!

A moment of silence for these shoes please?!?!

Backstage at Jill Stuart's Home

With fashion fever running rampant, Elle Decor sat down with Jill Stuart to get a backstage look at the designer to discuss the inspiration behind her six bedroom, five bathroom NYC downtown house with 360 degree views of the Hudson River.“It’s very quiet up here, like an oasis,” Stuart says. “I love how I can look out the window and see the Statue of Liberty or relax in my bathtub and watch boats go by. That’s true peace.”
The Well Appointed House loves Stuart's sense of fashion as much as we love her apartment! We are especially keen on the clean lines and chunky neutral sofas with pops of pinks and hints of blues and unexpected sources of glamour where you least expect them, like this gorgeous chandelier that peeks out from the hall.

Like her home and the trends we have seen throughout fashion week, Jill Stuart's Spring 2010 collection had that basic base with slashes of pinks and a wide variety of materials. Meshing her new collection with her home I've created a room look inspired by the two using Well Appointed Products, perfect for use in your own home!

Some key components to keep in mind are the stud detailing, mixture of textures and of course that HOT PINK punch against the black and tan. Click room for complete list of products used and links.
