'I'll Take the Check and the Table': Tavern On The Green Decor to be Auctioned!

There are some break-ups we saw coming a mile away, like Lindsay Lohan and... anyone, then there are those bad news break-ups like Elin and Tiger you end up knowing far too much about, but it's those break-ups that come from left field like Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins that really throw you for a loop.  The Well Appointed House is sad to report another power couple break-up: New York City and Tavern On The Green. Tavern On The Green has been a Manhattan institution since 1934 when Parks Commissioner Robert Moses founded the restaurant. In 1974 Warner LeRoy, whose father directed the Wizard of Oz, bought it and spent over $10 million in renovations.

The LeRoy family has since maintained ownership of the restaurant that was once located in the heart of Central Park but declared bankruptcy in 2009 and is currently battling the City of New York for ownership over the name.  The seventy-five year old eatery served as many as 650,000 customers per year and served its 'last supper' on New Years Eve.  As sad as this dissolution may be, unlike most failed marriages the public gets a shot at owning some of the goods.  Guernsey's auction house will be presenting the court-ordered auction of Tavern treats, such as more than 50 Tiffany and Baccarat chandeliers, 41 Moet champagne buckets, various works of art, and even a fully decorated Christmas tree.

The auction, which takes place January 13-15 and has no minimum, will feature over 1,000 lots including the flamboyant LeRoy's personal effects like his designer eye-glasses and custom-designed jackets.  The priciest piece on the docket is an 18-by-28 foot Tiffany chandelier once belonging to the proprietor, which is estimated to sell between $100,000-$500,000.
For those of us who may not have the time, or bucks, to be bidding, The Well Appointed House has its own lot of products that would be right at home in the Tavern on the Green.  Our extensive chandelier collection grows daily and while we may not have pieces displayed in the restaurant, we do have beautiful crystal chandeliers like stunning Swarvoski Strass Crystal Chandelier.

This makes me sad! I hate it when historical places go by the way side and then are no more.
Always dreamed of eating there if I ever got to New York. I guess the next best thing is to have a piece of it for some.

So sad. Is there nothing sacred anymore? I was able to go there at Christmas in 2002. The parts you could actually see were beautiful. There were so many people packed in there, though (literally elbow to elbow), that it was not the experience I had hoped it would be. Maybe I could afford to bid on one fork or something...;)
