Temple Grandin....Kudos, Claire Danes!

I am sitting here watching Temple Grandin on HBO, starring Claire Danes.  It is the story of the real life Dr. Temple Grandin, a woman described as the most accomplished and well-known adult with autism in the world.  She is widely known for her work in autism advocacy and was the inventor of the "Hug Machine" designed to calm hypersensitive patients.  The film is making its debut tonight and I am about halfway through it so far.  I am most impressed with the performances of Claire Danes, who plays Temple, and Julia Ormond, who plays her mother.  I have long been a fan of Julia Ormond for many years, since I saw her performance in Young Catherine.  I remember being in a Boston bar with Claire many years ago, in 1996, when she was first rising to fame.   I have to say that her performance tonight has truly moved me and has shown a new perspective on autism.  I applaud her for taking this role.  Kudos Claire!

Claire's contemporary SoHo loft was featured in the April 2000 issue of Architectural Digest.  You can view the entire article here.  Architecture and Interior Design was done by BKS/K Architects and Photography by Scott Frances.  It is fun to go back and see Claire a decade ago and take a peek inside her then home with its 1950's furniture in light of the role she plays tonight of a woman who was born in 1947 and lived in that era.  It is nice to see how far she has come in ten years (since the Architectural Digest article was written and she was young and living in NYC) and the difference I am sure she is making to countless children, adults and parents living with autism who are watching this movie tonight.

If you missed the movie, try to watch it.  I highly recommend it!
