Urbane Living: Decorating Ideas For Contemporary, Delightful (and just a tad on the small side) Spaces.

We often get caught up looking for inspiration in the grandest of spaces, but a large percentage of customers at The Well Appointed House are receiving their home decor goodies at city addresses with some more modest square footage.  Just because many of us don't live in sprawling country manors doesn't mean we can't have some award winning designs! Take a look at a few courtesy of Elledecor.com.

The above are from the studio apartment of designer Ron Marvin.  His point of view is strong and the innovative elements he brings into the space make it all his own.  The strength in his apartment are the tall ceilings (and if they aren't he did a good job faking it!) The window treatments in the living room draw the eye upwards, as does the painted wall above the headboard and the geometric shower curtain.  Some stray away from strong colors in an smaller space, but he choose hues that don't overwhelm, but rather warm the apartment.

The above space adds a lot of architectural elements that make it seem larger than it is. Hiring an architect to help you achieve this can be expensive (and impossible if you don't own your apartment) but there are some easy decorative fixes that can make your space feel like you've got... well space.
Bring a little bit of the country to your city dwelling with this silver lodge deer head (a-la Marvin's bathroom).  The bright silver and 3-D shape will pop against even a white wall, bringing the eye upwards.  Adding something unusual to a space can go a long way.
This sheet set is available as shown with a geometric "lego" or zig-zag pattern that in a bedroom where you don't have room for much more than a bed can make a powerful, chic statement.
This contemporary reverse brushstroke rug is a great idea for a long and narrow hallway, as shown. Have fun with your rugs; it adds interest in places people least expect, which is exactly why we love this glamour girl rug.
Even if you don't have enough floor space to house the above two rugs you can still bring in some fun pieces that will create a young, playful vibe.  Speaking of which, have you met Milan?
This Milan mat is also available in its reverse black and white and is a fun little pop for your room.
Take a bite out of the norm with this three feet by two feet alligator rug.  Its a quirky, fun piece that surely won't be expected.  For more fun small space ideas check out our new items section.

Philanthropy is In: Westchester Children's Museum

Living in the suburbs of New York City with three young children, my husband and I have enjoyed familiarizing ourselves and being a part of the development of the Westchester Children's Museum.  As active supporters of our community, we signed on two years ago as members of the Founding Family Society and I have enjoyed participating in some of the fun events supporting development of this soon-to-be fabulous museum.

As it isn't every day that a new museum is created, if you are interested, I encourage you to take a peek inside how this museum is coming along!

There is a lovely video tour here: http://www.discoverwcm.org/visit.cfm?navid=9
The museum will have a gorgeous location right on picturesque Long Island Sound, in historic landmark buildings on the Boardwalk at Rye Playland, which evoke whimsy and set the stage for an exceptional children's museum experience.  I am looking forward to the fresh air this location will provide for children and adults alike.  The space along the water provides nearly 40,000 square feet for the museum and a cafe.  The project is in development and I was given a private tour last year.  We are hoping that the museum will be complete by year end.

If you are interested in getting involved with the museum's development or donating, check out the website!

Join us for two fantastic events at the site of the future museum (now under construction!)

The Spring Benefit on Thursday, May 20th on the Rye Playland Boardwalk and the 4th Annual Explore-a-thon 2010 on Sunday, June 13th from 9AM - 12PM. We hope to see you there!  Tickets will soon be available on the website!

Get The Look: Hollywood Regency

The glamour and glitz of the thirties is back in a big way and popping up across magazines and blogs all over. Legendary designer Dorothy Draper was one of the few who spearheaded the movement, convincing filmmakers and private clients alike to use an ultra posh aesthetic, full of color and the unusual elements in their decor. Take a look at some modern day examples to get a better idea:

At The Well Appointed House we love the Hollywood Regency style and think its a great way to bring some chic playfulness to your space.

For this "look book" spread we used our staple pieces to get the look. Venetian mirrors and lacquered accents in bright colors (especially pink, green and blue) are key. Chandeliers that pack a punch, mirrored furniture, sheepskin, vintage prints and especially our Hollywood Spotlight lamp, which has been getting a lot of press, are essential components. Be sure to keep these in mind when pursuing The Well Appointed House!

Stark Warehouse Sale in New York City: How Much of a Savings?

On Wednesday, I reported on the Stark and Hermes warehouse sales, happening in New York City at the Metropolitan Pavaillion on West 18th Street.  I was at the Stark Sale on Wednesday.

In addition to area rugs, carpeting, fabrics and wallcoverings from Stark, the sale includes fabrics and linens by Kravet, Holland & Sherry, Scalamandre and bedding by Pratesi.

I talked to a few reps there, and your best bet to save is on area rugs and remnants.  Those, on average, he said were marked down 50%.  When I compared prices for broadlooms in the sale as compared to the showroom, it seemed that on average the prices were reduced by about $10 (not huge).  They will give designers an additional 10% off the prices shown at the sale.  Here is something to know.  If you are purchasing carpeting that needs to be cut and trimmed with a border, or installed, after you make your purchase with Stark, you will be shuttled over to the Costikyan area.  Costikyan as a company has traditionally been in the business of restoration: hand cleaning, restoration, reweaving, tinting, stretching and stain removal of fine rugs and tapestries.  They are now at every Stark Carpet Sale found at locations around the country.

Take this example and ask yourself if you are really getting a deal and perhaps skip all of the hype:

At the Stark Sale on Wednesday, I purchased a French Blue Stratford wool area rug - roughly 12 x 15 in size.  The 'discounted' price of the rug with the border was $2238.  I received an additional 10% off with the designer discount bringing the price down to $2104.  You pay freight for the uncut rug to go to Costikyan, which in this case was $55.

Here is the big catch - Costikyan's prices are off the charts expensive. I highly recommend before you checkout and pay for your Stark purchases that you head over to the Costikyan booth and get their cost and then make your decision as to whether you think this is a savings worthy of 'warehouse sale' prices.

The price they gave me to cut and sew the binding on my area rug was.....gulp.....$1000.00....
That included a $125 delivery charge and so the remaining $875 covers cutting the rug, sewing the binding around the edges and a pad to go underneath.

The Costikyan cost was nearly 50% of the cost of the rug.  This is important for people to know going into this 'sale'.  It is not such a big savings after all.  Total cost $3104.

Here are some photos of the fabric area of the sale:

This is an area where you can get some great deals.  The fabrics, wallpapers and trims are heavily discounted.  Some Scalamandre papers were $19 per roll and fabrics $19 per yard.  I saw some nice patterns.  If you can't venture over to the sale between now and Sunday, here is a hint.  The Scalamandre website now has an Outlet Store on it with the same items you will see at the warehouse sale.  I am sure if you check the other websites you might find some similar shopping areas.  If you want a real bargain, head to the fabric and wallcovering area and focus on the remnants and area rugs!

Spring Has Sprung In NYC and at The Well Appointed House

It wasn't so long ago that Central Park looked like this, so I took a break from scouting out the D&D building to celebrate Manhattan looking a little more this...

Some wishful skaters at Wollen Rink...

Only in New York...

The Plaza
Just dying to get into the Betsy Johnson designed Eloise room.

Bergdorf Goodman is getting into the art game by supporting the Brooklyn Art Museum's (BAM) silent auction.  Part of the collection is actually incorporated in the window display while the rest is on display on the third floor as well as online.  Every dollar raised goes to support BAM's programs and artists, spreading art throughout the city, so don't hesitate to bid before its too late (bidding ends the 28th).

With all the bright colors from the city and the park it got us craving a little more color in our own spaces.  New to The Well Appointed House, and soon to be a favorite of staffers and clients alike, is our collection of highly lacquered accent tables that take adorable to a whole new level of beyond.
The 'Tin Table IIZ is a fantastic side table perfect for housing your favorite book and best shaken martini.  The top has a brown and white zig-zag pattern that still works perfectly with the 16 different color combinations.  For an undeniably chic statement in your entranceway, the Palm Beach Demi Lune Console is the beginning and end-all.

Like all the pieces in the collection, each are available in sixteen highly lacquered colors, all from the Sherwin Williams paint collection, with the exception of Club Navy, from Ralph Lauren, or White Dove, from Benjamin Moore.  Its a perfect way to add a piece that works perfectly for your space.  For further customization, the other other side tables and coffee tables allow you further artistic license.

Tables like this 'Tin Table II, that has an extended quatrefoil shape, has a top offered in painted raffia to match the base color, natural raffia, a faux gator, linen, coordinating lacquer, or faux lizard in white, tan or brown.

These colorful coffee tables have a fun geometric top with a thick clear glass top, to let the design show through.  This is a only a sampling of all the great colorful tables we carry, so be sure to check out our new items section and scroll down!

Stefano Tonchi Beats Carine Roitfeld Out For Editor Of W Magazine- At Least She Has A Well Appointed House To Come Home To!

Stefano Tonchi, past editor of T Magazine, has just confirmed he is the new editor of W Magazine, beating out heavyweights like Sally Singer of Vogue, Joe Zee of Elle and, of course, the face of Parisian fashion and Editor of French Vogue, Carine Roitfeld.  Carine is the more risky foil to American Vogue Editor, Anna Wintour, and often finds her name splashed across magazines and blogs alike-and not just for her editing. It stands to reason that her discerning eye for fashion would translate perfectly into interior design.  Below are some shots of her Parisian apartment.
The view from Roitfeld's Parisian Penthouse
Roitfeld let the beautiful, original crown molding and detailing throughout the bones of the apartment take center stage and decorated with modern, sparse furniture with clean lines.  Clutter need not apply.

Not sure what a fung shei master would say about that storage center in the middle of the hallway.
Roitfeld has even used her home as a location for French Vogue.

On top of being one of the final words in fashion, Carine is also a mother of two, a son Vlad and a daughter, Julia, pictured below.

Julia and her brother are making a names for themselves in fashion, art and on the party scene. Julia took after her mother and even had her New York City Apartment photographed for the urban photographer Todd Selby and his website.

Julia Reston-Roitfeld has forgone bookcases in favor of stacking her favorite magazines and table top books on the floor; tres chic!
Are you surprised at her collection of Vogues? Neither were we.
 Reston-Roitfeld sitting pretty!
Love the creative use of displaying her photographs.

There are no words for the happiness that closet brings!  What we wouldn't give for a peak!

Below is a spread of our Julia Restoin-Roitfeld picks.
