Elle Decor's Q&A With Trina Turk

On my recent trips to East Hampton this summer I've been spending quite a bit of time at Trina Turk's pop-up boutique on the main drag.  Her colorful prints and mod creations are so inviting, but I always spend time looking at her home collection, despite the fact that we carry her entire residential line at The Well Appointed House.  Both her clothing and interior collections scream summer and being able to style your home with her pillows, rugs and other goodies prolongs the sunny season.
It's no surprise that this gifted designer is also a skilled hostess.  Recently she sat down with Elle Decor to reveal her tips on how to throw a stylish fete in the Springs and New York.  Read about it here and be sure to check out some of our review of her resort and residential collection.  We can't wait to see her new products and are just as excited to hear she'll be showing at New York Fashion week to commemorate the brand's fifteenth anniversary. The Life Aquatic

While we sit nipping at the weekend's heels, it's fun to day-dream about the sand and sea.

These inspiration shots, brought to you by House Beautiful Magazine, make us want to dig our big toe in the sand, grab a mai-tai and and turn up the Jimmy Buffet.

The Well Appointed House's very own - Melissa Hawks - is with her family in Bermuda and I asked her to send along a pic of her work perch there overlooking the water in Tucker's Town and this is what she sent:

Now you can see why the life aquatic is on our minds here, and what a perfect spot to upload some fabulous new home decor fit for any Bermudian!  Melissa tells me that she is working on a fabulous post on Bermuda homes and architecture.  Stay tuned!

When it comes to seaside decor The Well Appointed House has you covered from the bed you sleep on to the pictures on the wall.  Our beach house decor section as well as our coral reef and nautical yachts sections have been getting a lot of love the past few weeks and we are particularly keen on the products below.  Don't forget that The Well Appointed House doesn't ship internationally directly, but we do work with myus.com and have many overseas island clients and will ship through this carrier!  If you are decorating an island home, we are the place to shop!

The coral accents bring an elegant yet relaxed feel to your space, while other pieces like the shell chest add an artistic, unique and more formal vibe. One of our favorite pieces is the handmade jelly-fish chandelier, perfect to hang in a kitchen, kid's room or even bathroom. We chose the numbered sea-life pillows just to prove that although oceanography class was painfully boredom, the sea is still a beautiful thing! Pin It

A Well Appointed Home: Tommy Hilfiger's Plaza Apartment

Tommy Hilfiger is one of the great arbiters of American style so it stands to reason his home would be as well appointed as his current clothing collection. After selling his Connecticut mansion for a cool twenty million, Hilfger, his wife Dee and newborn son Sebastian traded the country air for the city streets and moved into the famed New York City Plaza Hotel.  In the August issue of Harper's Bazaar Douglas Friedman shot photos of the stylish duo and their penthouse to show the perfect marriage of American pop culture, high glamour and just a dash of that classic prep.
Dee wears a bright red gown from Tommy Hilfiger... who else?

Their space pays homage to the hotel's history without being owned by it. Regal touches like the bold fringed window seat and gilded walls play into the Plaza persona; the Eloise doll and tea cup plants are playful additions.
Hilfiger is an avid art collector.  This Andy Warhol original of Elizabeth Taylor adds a contemporary edge to this glamourous sitting room.  The designer told Harper's Anne Monoky he once met with Warhol who tried to get him to invest in the then un-known Stephen Sprouse. He did not.

Harry Benson photographs adorn this eclectic dinning room.  Look how amazing our black and bone Moroccan inspired side chairs look in this space; they add a worldly vibe that's still very on trend.

Above and below are two examples of designing for the genders.  The bond that ties them together is the understated cool and unique vibe. Lavender for a girl's room isn't exactly groundbreaking, but paired with the cool black and white photos and white PVC upholstered X benches keeps it chic.

I had the unique experience of actually visiting Hilfiger's Greenwich grounds during a shoot for his ex-wife's children's store, Best & Co, which is no longer in business, and it was truly remarkable. Filled with style and country glamour, the home was editorial worthy but still looked like a family actually lived there.

Love the fur throw used as the blanket; it's a simple way to take your room from summer to winter in a snap.  Get the look for less here with our Silver Fox Faux Fur Throw.
So which do you prefer, Tommy and Dee's Plaza penthouse or Hilfiger's old Greenwich estate? Pin It

House Beautiful's Kitchen Of The Year Designed By Jeff Lewis

Each month House Beautiful magazine turns out amazing issue after amazing issue of inspiring and original interiors, but it's the annual Kitchen of the Year they sponsor that has the interior design world currently buzzing.  For its third year, the HB team asked designer, house flipper and Reality TV personality Jeff Lewis to design the kitchen, which debuted in Rockefeller Center yesterday.  Lewis is known just as well for his sleek, modern aesthetic as he is his quirky and oh, just a wee bit particular demeanor, so we're not surprised at the refreshingly simple yet stylish end result.  Take a look at some shots of the space courtesy of Shelter Pop via House Beautiful.

The kitchen is open from July 19-30, but if you don't get a chance to swing by and sample some chef demos and already missed Lewis and his posse, be sure to stop by after Friday when the kitchen turns into Bar 30 by House Beautiful, the perfect spot to grab drinks after work.

For more on Jeff Lewis and his cast of characters, check out our earlier post on his show "Flipping Out" and stay tuned for details on the Season Four premier. Pin It
