Green Home Decor at The Well Appointed House - Gideon Mendelson for House Beautiful & A Fab Green Kitchen

I read the February 2011 issue of House Beautiful and saw a fabulous spread, "Fresh Start" featuring a home from the New York City suburb of Purchase, NY (where I had a home until last year).  Designer Gideon Mendelson put a fresh 'polished suburban' spin on the interior of the newly built English-style house for some 60-something empty nesters going from the city to the suburbs.  Gideon gives the rooms a crisp and youthful look with spirited colors and if you haven't already read the article, check it out.  The kitchen features a pea-green gingham ceiling, which was painted on canvas by Silvere Boureau.  Mendelson gave this modern kitchen a custom bright green island.

It is interesting to see how you can give a kitchen a burst of color by painting just the island but leaving the cabinetry a neutral hue like white.  This way if you tire of the color, all you have to do is repaint the island!  Not a bad idea to give some added oomph to the ceiling as well, because again, nothing is easier than having a ceiling repainted in ceiling white if your tastes change.
