Retraction! American designer is NOT selected for Prince William and Kate's New Home

You've got to love a little drama in the design world...

I received a note in my inbox today from the Editor at Large that read "American designer selected for Royal couple's first home".  How could I not open this jewel of information?  It continued: It's the job a million designers would kill for, and Kenneth Bordewick of Beverly Hills Luxury Interiors got it.

Wow.

So, I clicked the link and there it was, the retraction.

So it appears that Kenneth and his luxury interiors will not be outfitting the royal love nest or at least this has not been confirmed.  But in case your interested check out his website.  I am sure this little snafu is generating him some nice buzz.

Water Fountains for Your Garden Space

Need to find your inner zen?  Have you ever noticed how relaxed you become when you go to a spa, have a massage and then sit afterward with a warm blanket and some iced green tea in the relaxation room and enjoy nothing but sounds of the slow trickle of a water fountain?  Or sit in the courtyard of an outdoor garden room surrounded by flower covered trellis and a central fountain area for an evening candlelit dinner?  Is there anything more romantic and relaxing?  I can think of one that we love down in Palm Beach - the Brazilian Court - there is nothing like eating next to the fountain under the stars and enjoying the murmur of conversation and laughter:

Scenes from the Brazilian Court fountain area.

Well, you can get that seem relaxing feel at home with our elegant water fountains.  Take a peek and order now!  Here are some of my favorites from The Well Appointed House:

Welcome Spring! Tips from Susan Cohen, Coordinator of the New York Botanical Garden's Landscape Program

Welcome Spring!  I caught up quickly yesterday with my friend and landscape architect, Susan Cohen.  I mentioned her in my post yesterday on the fabulous tree boxes at Versailles and I thought it appropriate to include her again today since Spring is officially here.

I have known Susan for six years now - she is my landscape architect.  She is also an authority on gardening.  She's been in practice for over 25 years and is the Coordinator of the Landscape Design Program at the New York Botanical Garden and has her own busy design business in Riverside, CT (part of Greenwich).  Last year she was inducted as a Fellow into the American Society of Landscape Architects, which was well deserved because of her design merits.  She also leads a Landscape Design Portfolio Series in New York City, in which she organizes presentations with renowned landscape architects and the public.  She has also helped to re-establish the landscape design program at Smith College.  Aside from her talents in the garden, she is an all around lovely woman and we couldn't think of anyone better to give you all some Spring gardening tips!

We asked Susan for a few quick tips on getting your garden spaces ready for warm weather!
Now that Spring is here, what are the first things we should do now to prepare for a nice season of gardening?  Susan: Make a general plan of action for each part of your garden, with notes of plants to divide or move, spaces to rearrange, and shopping lists of new plants and supplies to have on hand.  Vow this year to pay special attention to color schemes in your garden -- and give away plants that no longer work well for you.

What are your favorite flowers to plant now?  Susan:  'True Blue' Pansies.  I plant them in all my pots every year, and they bring joy from March through May.

Can you share a photo from your garden now?  Susan:  This photo is my garden, with the 'True Blue' Pansies under the flowering crabapple, Malus floribunda.

I planted True Blues in my pots on her advice!  Enjoy and welcome Spring! -Melissa Hawks

The Versailles Orangerie and Luxe Tree Boxes & Planters

I was doing research last week on tree boxes and had a meeting with my landscape architect, Susan Cohen (who I adore!) and I came across this gorgeous picture of the Versailles Orangerie in France.  In French it is called the L'Orangerie du Chateau de Versailles and it was built by Jules Hardouin-Mansart between 1684 and 1686.
It is an extension of the grand gardens nearby and is used as a place to shelter plants and of course delight the eye.  In the winter, the Versailles Orangerie is home to more than a thousand trees (mostly orange trees) in boxes.  From May to October, the trees are put back outdoors in the Parterre Bas.  The gardens are just breathtaking and I can't wait to see them when I am there in May.

With gardening on the horizon now in most of the country we have a spectacular collection of garden planters at The Well Appointed House that I have all hand picked as favorites. We have some fabulous tree boxes are here are some reminiscent of the ones in France:

Our Wrought Iron Directoire Tree Boxes are not inexpensive at $2484 but they are hand made in the USA and they are made to last (longer than wood).  They are a good size and come in all different colors - including custom colors if you need them painted to match your house.

Here is just a sampling of some of the colors and we can have them made in custom sizes.  They can be found here.  Another favorite is our Square Green and Iron Planter, which is $1818:

We also have much more affordable wood and fiberglass options in varying sizes and price points:

Our Fiberglass Hampton Planter, $230 is sturdy and will last long.

I am sure that many of you are excited for Spring and Summer, so order your garden planters and supplies now!

Purple Power - Lavender Hues in Decorating

House Beautiful / Frances Janisch
It is a bit surprising that a color so associated with a silly children's character can actually look so chic, whether on the walls of your formal living room or in a floor-sweeping, red-carpet-worthy gown.  In interior design and in fashion, purple is clearly having a moment.  Word has it Hermes has even introduced a new line of china in the royal hue.

The color du jour is actually turning up in a range of shades -- from deep violet to amethyst jewel tones to ethereal lavender.  It's amazing how purple can at once make a room feminine and soft, as well as clean and modern, all with regal undertones. It could be in the form of a lacquered chest in a child's room, a plush couch in a casual den, or a ladylike chaise lounge in a bedroom, purple is an instant refresher. Something to think about now that a new season is upon us.

Hollywood style setters like Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis  and Cate Blanchett chose various shades of purple for their Oscar night dresses. No doubt the stars were taking cues from the runways, where luxe labels like Gucci, Chanel, Fendi, Marc Jacobs and others showed looks in the vibrant color. The trend seems to be gaining momentum, showing up in the fall collections at Gucci, Alberta Ferretti, and Yves Saint Laurent among them.  Purple is certainly a statement when it comes to the wardrobe, but what better way to standout?  Think about a swapping your staid black cocktail dress for something in a sweet but sultry shade of plum.

If you are not feeling bold enough to paint bedroom periwinkle, commit to a violet couch, or invest in lavender fur, simply try a sprig of fresh lavender or bunch of hydrangeas in a vase and enjoying adding a touch of the silly-yet-chic shade to your life.
