My Midnight in Paris!

I had a quick getaway with my husband to Paris a week and a half ago.   I knew it would be fabulous when we arrived to our room at the Ritz Paris, dropped our bags, refreshed ourselves after the flight, went downstairs to have lunch on the terrace of the Bar Vendome and supermodel Kate Moss came in and was seated next to us.   She sat with her fiance to our right and to our left was a super svelte and fashionably dressed group of Chanel executives in town from London and abroad.  The outdoor portion of Bar Vendome is quintessential Paris with statues, urns, water fountains and of course, topiaries -- and details abound, such as the double "R"s on the chairs:

After lunch we strolled (leisurely, of course, with no kids to worry about!) through the beautiful Jardin Des Tuileries and went to the Musee de l'Orangerie where we pensively pondered the beauty of Monet's "Water Lillies" in the room Monet himself designed to be a "decompression space" (how nice after a long flight).  We continued through the halls viewing works by Cezanne, Renoir, Rousseau, Modigliani, Laurencin, Matisse, Picasso, Derain, Soutine and Utrillo.  Ahhh Paris!
We visited the Champs Elysees, the Arc de Triomphe, went to the Eiffel Tower, stopped to rest our tired feet and sip capuccinos at the elegant Parc du Champ de Mars which leads to the equally exquisite Ecole Militaire:

We visited the Louvre, went to the Orsay, saw Notre Dame, walked extensively through the Pantheon where historical greats such as Victor Hugo, Madame Curie, Voltaire and Rousseau are buried in underground crypts.  We checked out the Sorbonne, the beautiful bridges along the Seine and street after street of spectacular architecture.  As we were convinced that we were burning many more calories than we normally do in the course of a day, we stopped every day at 3:00 p.m. for coffee and pastries (eclairs and ice cream or delightful pastel colored macaroons from the original Parisian patisserie, Laduree - we visited three of their locations, stay tuned for more on that).
I snapped this photo of the Goyard store on the Rue de Honoree - their travel luggage is just so French

The Louvre is incredible and some of my favorite moments included seeing modern-day artists reproducing works by the old masters. It's inspiring and part of the whole experience.

Then there was Versailles!  Unrivaled, spectacular, opulence!  It was such a treat to see the famous tree boxes in the gardens of Versailles, after I blogged about them in March.

For lunches on this trip we dined at Cafe de Flore, Angelina at Versailles, Le Restaurant at the Musee d'Orsay, Cafe de la Paix and as mentioned above, Bar Vendome at the Ritz.  (and many bakeries along the way!)
(Le Restaurant)

For dinners we enjoyed superb French cuisine at L'Espadon at the Ritz, Restaurant Le MeuriceLedoyen (since 1792 - wow!) and L'Ambroisie.  Each was spectacular and we met the chefs at L'Espadon and Le Meurice.  Bon Appetit!

Stay tuned this week for a lot more on my trip and fabulous photos I took of Parisian windows and doors!

It's Been Lovely, Pansies....

I'm up this morning pulling out my pansies and replacing them with my summer flowers.  It's been lovely seeing their magical blue blooms since March!

If you haven't done so already, it's not a bad time to make the switch and why not cut a few today and put them out in simple vases for your Memorial Day outdoor entertaining?

I'll have some vases filled with the petite wonders by my pool this evening!  Happy gardening!

BBQ Chic

Dabney Lee Monogrammed Personalized Lucite Tray $130.00 (USD) excl tax
Summer is finally here and the outdoor entertaining season is off to a start this weekend.  No doubt most of us will be mingling in a backyard, on a patio, poolside or around a grill -- hopefully, with a cocktail in hand. Is there such a thing as keeping a casual barbecue chic? Of course! Just because we might be flipping burgers or roasting hotdogs, does not mean we have to sacrifice style. We just need the right accoutrement. A flirty frock or mini-shift dress, a colorful beaded necklace, a pair of K. Jacques or Tuccia Di Capri flats... and let's not forget the grilling gear.

Traveling in Style

Natalia Vodianova arriving in Nice, France
We all know traveling in style is not as easy as it sounds. Between lugging lots of luggage, getting through airport security, running to your gate and then sitting in a cramped plane seat for hours, chances of us arriving looking as good as we left are slim. But it is worth a try! And while we might not fly in private jets and get VIP treatment in an airport, we can take a little inspiration from these jet-setting celebs, like Natalia Vodianova and Beyonce Knowles, who recently travelled to France for the Cannes Film Festival. If there is ever a time to look chic while traveling, that would be it!

Pippa Middleton looked camera-ready when she was maneuvering around Madrid's Barajas Airport recently after a vacation with friends.

Whether you are wearing jeans like Elizabeth and Natalia, or a dress like Beyonce, clearly having the right bag -- a large but slightly structured carry-all like a Birkin -- helps keep a polished and pulled-together look while navigating around the friendly skies. But looking fresh upon arrival also relies on what you pack in that bag. So, don't leave home without a cashmere blanket, eye mask and toiletry bag (for your Evian mist, of course) -- these simple creature comforts can mean the difference between looking shabby or chic when you touch down.
Getaway Combo -- Available in Various Colors $148.00 (USD) excl tax

Announcing House Beautiful's 500+ Favorite Paint Colors App!

Hot off the Press! I got an amazing video preview of this new app last Monday when I was in NYC at Hearst, and here it is!  I'm getting the app this morning from Hearst and will let you know how it is!  If you want to get yours, read below!

New York, NY (May 24, 2011) – Love the color of your throw pillows so much that you’ve been scouring paint stores looking for the exact color for your bedroom?  Well, the search ends now with House Beautiful’s 500+ Favorite Paint Colors App for iPad, available now on the App Store.  The app is the ideal resource for finding the perfect color.  House Beautiful, the go-to color authority, has been helping readers master the subject with informative monthly features in the magazine, books and a bookazine, interactive events, and even a custom pull-out cover highlighting color. Now, the brand continues to evolve with its first utility app, sponsored by Blanco.

Tap to find your favorite colors in a variety of ways, search specific paint colors from brands including Benjamin Moore, Farrow & Ball, Glidden, Ralph Lauren Paint, Sherwin-Williams, and more.  Not sure what colors suit a room?  Rely on “Editors’ Picks” for a curated collection from the editors – or, click on the Color Personality tool to find the hue that fits you best.  App users can save their favorites in “My Paint Box,” where up to four colors can be compared side-by-side.  Paint colors can also be viewed in full screen – a digital version of a paint swatch so users can hold it up and see how it looks before committing to painting the entire wall.

“This app is an incredibly useful – and fun – tool for homeowners, decorators and their clients, and anyone looking to add a little color to their home,” said Newell Turner, editor-in-chief of House Beautiful.  “Whether you’re searching for the perfect paint color to set off the artwork in your living room, or just looking for inspiration, our app takes a deep dive into one of our favorite topics – color.”

House Beautiful’s 500+ Favorite Paint Colors App has four key content areas with multiple levels of functionality that include:

  • Color River: A scrolling “river” where users can browse 669 paint colors and sort by any combination of Colors (pink, purples, bright, warm, etc.); Spaces (kitchen, living room, north-facing room, etc.); or Moods (cozy, look younger, energizing, etc.).  And, users can read what interior designers have to say about using the specific color.
  • Editors’ Picks: Color collections of the best-of the-best recommendations from the editors of House Beautiful in 10 different hues.
  • Color Personality Tool: Some numerologists are convinced that color can be a clue to your personality, basing their theories on the relationship between numbers, colors, and the alphabet.  House Beautiful’s 500+ Favorite Paint Colors users simply type in their name, and their color personality is revealed.  Once the color is determined, four paint color recommendations that match the user’s personality are provided.
  • My Paint Box: While navigating through the app and discovering favorite colors, users can tap the “Add to My Paint Box” option to store the color swatch and paint name in their personal paint box.  Users can also select up to four colors to conduct a side-by-side comparison.
  • Social Media and Email Integration: House Beautiful’s 500+ Favorite Paint Colors integrates with Facebook, Twitter and email, allowing users to share content with their friends and family.

House Beautiful’s 500+ Favorite Paint Colors was conceived in-house by the same team that produces the monthly print magazine and designed and built by iCrossing, a digital marketing agency and a unit of House Beautiful’s parent company, Hearst Corporation.

Blanco, makers of award-winning stainless steel sinks and the SILGRANT II collection – the first line of sinks that blend inspired color and unparalleled durability –- is the sponsor of the app.   Users are re-directed to in-app content that pairs different color countertops with color-coordinated Blanco sinks.

House Beautiful’s 500+ Favorite Paint Colors App is available for $4.99 from the App Store on iPad or at www.itunes.com/appstore.  Here's a preview:

Music for Our Eyes: Urban Planning Exhibition Hall in Huainan, China

Some things in life can be music to our ears, and in this case, I'd say this spectacular example of unusual architecture is truly music for our eyes. The newly designed urban planning exhibition hall in Huainan, in China's Anhui province certainly has a noteworthy design. This very well could be the world's largest grand piano and violin. If only we could see it in person!

It's not only the start of the English social season (it's been in full swing this month already in NYC!) but also the start of the celebrated Chelsea Flower Show in the UK.

The show is held by the Royal Horticulture Society in the grounds of the Royal Hospital in Chelsea, London and will be this week from May 24-28. The show will include 32 specially created gardens and the Great Pavillion will showcase more than 100 nurseries.

Tickets for this year's show have already sold out but it will all be filmed by the BBC. (Tickets can still be purchased for the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show). You can already watch full coverage here at the BBC website. I just checked and there is great coverage! Enjoy!

Rare Bird: Fashion Icon Iris Apfel

Iris Apfel in June 2011's Architectural Digest. Photography by Roger Davies

While perusing the society pages, do you ever wonder who the woman in the oversized, round glasses is? She never fails to be adorned something bold and eye-catching, always slightly quirky and ecclectic but dressed-to-the-nines nonetheless? It's New York City and Palm Beach's own fashion peacock Iris Apfel. She is a former interior designer and owner of Old World Weavers textile company (which sold to Stark in 1992) and even worked on White House restoration projects for nine presidents. Apfel is certainly a part of a unique breed of style icons.

Iris Apfel and her husband Carl

Her over-the-top style was the subject of an exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art called "Rara Avis (Rare Bird): The Irreverent Iris Apfel, in 2005, which then travelled to the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach in 2007, and most recently was on display at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Mass.

A tribute to Iris Apfel's unique style, published in 2007
The 89-year old continues to be a force in fashion and just launched a line of jewelry called Rara Avis by Iris Apfel for the Home Shopping Network. And for their June 2011 issue, Architectural Digest featured her three-bedroom Park Avenue Manhattan apartment. Clearly, her home is every bit as idiosyncratic as her distinctive personal style.

Photos by Roger Davies
"Taste you can learn. But style is like charisma. You know it when you see it," Apfel tells Arch Digest.

The apartment is filled to the brim with a very personalized and creative mix of antiquities, flea market finds, color and texture. "I don't do run-of-the-mill stuff," she tells the magazine. "And I don't do minimal."

The magazine also reveals that famed photographer Bruce Weber is doing a documentary on her. That will certainly be something to see!
