Getting Around New York City this Christmas in a Wheelchair! Meet Accessible Dispatch!

We did a post a few weeks ago about Holiday Fun with Kids in New York CIty and have also highlighted some fun city events, including visiting the lobby of the Dream Hotel.  However, how can one get around NYC with ease during this busy holiday time with loved ones in a wheelchair?  We believe that every member of the family, including the disabled, should enjoy a Well Appointed holiday!  So we are sharing a tip on getting around New York City in a wheelchair during this time of gridlock and traffic!

New York City is an exciting place to be during the holidays. Both visitors and residents love to visit the Christmas tree and ice rink at Rockefeller Center or tour FAO Schwarz’s famous toy store on Fifth Avenue.

But for individuals who use wheelchairs, New York’s holiday crowds can make it difficult to get around. The increased crowds also increase the stress of finding a wheelchair-accessible cab. Imagine: Of the 13,000 taxis in Manhattan, only 233 can handle wheelchairs. So how do people with disabilities connect with the taxis they need?

Enter Accessible Dispatch. Accessible Dispatch is a company that helps New York City visitors and residents who use wheelchairs to immediately hail an accessible taxi without reservations. The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) solicited bids from companies to help improve accessible taxi dispatching. Accessible Dispatch is a company owned and operated by West Haven, Connecticut-based Metro Taxi, which submitted the winning bid and now implements the service.

Accessible Dispatch offers several ways to order a cab, on-demand, via phone, text, online or with the touch of a button with a specially-designed (and free) mobile app. Accessible Dispatch then locates the closest wheelchair accessible cab and then sends it directly to the passenger, wherever they are in Manhattan. Taxis arrive in a matter of minutes.

The five ways to request an Accessible Dispatch wheelchair-accessible taxi are:

1. Call 311
2. Call the dispatch center directly: (646) 599-9999
3. Text a request to: (646) 400-0789
4. Use the mobile app “Wheels on Wheels” (WOW Taxi), powered by Taxi Magic and available free at the iTunes online app store
5. Order online at www.nyaccessibledispatch.org

Now, people who use wheelchairs don’t have to worry about calling hours or even days ahead for a cab. Instead, they can focus on participating in the unique excitement that is New York City at the holidays. Accessible Dispatch gives people who use wheelchairs the ability to be spontaneous: to go where they want, when they want—even at the height of the holidays.

Accessible Dispatch’s wheelchair-accessible taxis will respond to trips originating in Manhattan and ending anywhere in the five boroughs, Westchester and Nassau counties and the three regional airports. Passengers pay the normal metered taxi fare in New York City from the point of pick-up to destination. There are no extra costs to passengers.
