I was in New York City yesterday for an appointment and I couldn’t help but stop by Bergdorf Goodman to peruse new things before heading home. My first stop was the second floor shoe salon and let’s just say that I spent more time there than I had planned, leaving with three new pairs of Spring sandals. I couldn’t resist this one by Chanel, which I thought would be perfect for evening with a black dress (and more importantly, a tan) once the weather warms up:
I was struck by how unusual the design and structure of this particular shoe was. My first thought was that I was buying a pair of Art Deco shoes!
My mind first jumped to the gorgeous art deco architecture in South Beach and Los Angeles, where architects during that period emphasized verticality to usher in modernity.
..and the spectacular art deco doorways that we see in cities around the country:
We are seeing a big presence of deco influence this Spring with skyscraper heels and geometric jewels. Louis Vuitton’s spring bag collection includes the Cuir Art Deco line which is filled with shoulder bags that pay tribute to the Art Deco movement.
The luminous Spring 2011 Couture collection from Chanel sparkled:

Again we see that 1920’s and 1930’s influence in the designs. Karl Lagerfield took inspiration from 1920’s artist, Marie Laurencin, who had painted a portrait of Coco Chanel during that period.

In addition to what we are seeing on the runways in 2011 and the fact that mirrored furniture made a big return to home decor over the past three years (view our collection here), we also read last week about “Art Deco’s Comeback” in Margaret Russell’s latest issue of Architectural Digest. Collectors know that a treasure trove of art deco furniture is coming on the auction block this Spring at Christie’s Paris.
With all of the buzz about Art Deco, we continue to expand our offerings of mirrored furniture. Last night I was selecting new pieces for our retail site and with my Chanel sandals on my mind, I selected glamorous art deco inspired lamps that we will be launching on the site in a few days. Here is a preview, I can just imagine this one perched on Greta Garbo’s dressing table:
