One Bathroom Two Ways: Powder Room Perfection

Over the past eleven months, I have been busy brightening the house that we bought.  I love color and as a thirty-something mom-on-the-go balancing a busy life with three young children, I want a house that is happy and uplifting!  This is a mudroom bathroom in our home, which is located off the garage.  This is the before:

Each homeowner has their own taste and style when it comes to decorating and there is no right way of doing anything.  The key is to personalize your space.  The “before” was a bit darker and more subdued.  I made a few changes: new toilet, had the marble floor professionally cleaned and polished, painted the woodwork a lighter shade,  painted the ceiling (it was brown before), replaced knobs on the cabinets, replaced the marble countertop (with a marble slab from a countertop in a “chauffer’s apartment” at our house that we were turning into a playroom that would have been thrown out – reuse, reuse, reuse!), new sconces, wallpapered with a Colefax paper, new valance and presto!  The fabric was a Brunshwig & Fils remnant that I purchased at their warehouse sale for $10.  I added a contrasting fabric (also from the warehouse sale) along the bottom and some trim and came up with an elegant window treatment that softens the space!
Some cheery hand towels  (Similar ones on my site), nice Molten Brown hand soap and a fabulous room spray (my favorite is Tubereuse by Diptyque) and you have cheery and fresh powder room!

Love the new room!! As you say, chacun à son gôut but I find the new bath a huge improvement. Changing the marble was a game changer – and that Colefax paper has always been a favorite.
