Once in a while we buy something for ourselves that we enjoy so much that we simply have to share it!
About a month ago, I bought this boatneck pullover cotton sweater by Marika Charles at one of my favorite stores, Calypso. I’ve worn it a few times and each time I do, I fall more in love with the fact that it was made using a patented dye process that makes it look like a hand painted canvas.
(some of the dyes from their website)
I liked the fit and fabric of the sweater so much that I went back and bought a similar tee:
So, with my curiosity piqued, I had to do some research on just exactly who Marika Charles is…
It turns out that the company is a collection of women’s wear designed by sister and brother, Marika and Charles, in their upstate New York studio. The duo have been working together since 2002. Pretty amazing for siblings. Each garment is designed, developed and produced in their studio and dyed and painted using their patented process, Phly-Dye.
Marika is an accomplished artist who has exhibited in the Smithsonian, MoMa and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She is also the recipient of a National Endowment of Arts Award. (I know a good thing when I see it and its rare that a sweater has this kind of effect on me!). Her clothing designs are sold at stores such as Barney’s, Fred Segal and Bergdorf Goodman. Brother Charles has had a career in textile design and production. He built a state-of-the-art textile printing and dyeing complex which he sold in 1996 and took time to focus on creating this new printing technique – Phly-Dye – which has been issued several patents and trademarks. It’s amazing to see this combination of art and fashion so eloquently coming together!
My new sweater has just returned from the dry cleaner and looks great. I was apprehensive to see if the dyed design would stay in tact after a cleaning and it did! Every few years a favorite sweater comes along that combines style and comfort and this one is not only pretty but slimming! Kudos Marika Charles!
Looks like Sienna Miller likes Marika Charles as well! (Image)
